Apprenticeships

Gain hands-on experience, earn a salary and develop the skills for your future – all while working and training as an apprentice.

What is an Apprenticeship?

An apprentice is an employee who combines practical experience in the workplace with structured training to develop the knowledge, skills and behaviours needed for their chosen career.

As an apprentice, you will:
  • Be employed in a real job and receive a salary.
  • Learn and develop skills while working in an Early Years setting.
  • Complete training during your paid working hours.
  • Receive regular one-to-one training, guidance and support.
  • Learn through a mixture of workplace activities, online learning, self-study, research and practical experience.
  • Have opportunities to practise and demonstrate new skills in your workplace.
  • Work towards the knowledge, skills and behaviours required for your apprenticeship.
  • Have the same employment rights as other employees, including holiday entitlement.
  • Be paid at least the appropriate National Minimum Wage for your age and circumstances.

An apprenticeship gives you the opportunity to gain valuable experience, develop confidence and competence in your role, and build the skills you need for your future career.

Established in 2011, Swatpro works with its training partners to deliver high-quality apprenticeships and vocational training, supporting learners and employers across the South West and beyond.

As a Swatpro training partner, Wessex Training & Assessment Ltd works within this established network, benefiting from shared expertise, quality assurance and support to ensure that our apprenticeship provision meets the required standards.

Swatpro and its partners are committed to providing high-quality, flexible training that meets the needs of learners and employers and supports individuals to develop the knowledge, skills and behaviours they need to succeed in their careers.

Working in Partnership with Swatpro

Wessex Training & Assessment Ltd works in partnership with South West Association of Training Providers Ltd (Swatpro) to deliver high-quality Early Years apprenticeships.

Swatpro leads on the delivery of apprenticeship standards and provides the framework through which apprenticeship funding and associated support are accessed. Wessex Training & Assessment provides the specialist Early Years training, assessment and individual support that our apprentices and employers receive throughout their programme.

Our Approach
At Wessex, we believe that apprentices learn best when their training is closely connected to what they do every day.
Our work-based learning approach means that our assessors work directly with apprentices and their employers, providing regular one-to-one support and helping apprentices to develop and apply their knowledge, skills and behaviours within their Early Years setting.
Learning is tailored to the individual and combines workplace experience with planned off-the-job training, professional discussions, observations, research, self-study and online learning.

Putting the Apprentice at the Heart of Learning
Every apprentice is treated as an individual. We will:
  • Make sure the apprenticeship is appropriate for the apprentice’s role, experience and career aspirations.
  • Ensure their workplace provides opportunities to develop and demonstrate the knowledge, skills and behaviours required by their apprenticeship.
  • Complete an initial assessment to identify existing knowledge and skills, prior learning and any areas for development.
  • Create an individualised training plan that reflects the apprentice’s starting point and learning needs.
  • Provide regular one-to-one training, assessment, feedback and support.
  • Work closely with the apprentice and their employer throughout the programme.
  • Identify any additional learning or support needs and put appropriate support in place.
  • Help apprentices develop confidence, independence and professional skills within their Early Years role.
  • Support the development of English and maths skills where required or appropriate as part of the apprentice’s training.
  • Encourage apprentices to reflect on their practice, wellbeing and continuing professional development.
  • Provide careers information, advice and guidance to help apprentices consider their future development and progression.
  • Prepare apprentices for the assessment requirements of their apprenticeship and successful completion of their programme.

The Impact
Our aim is for apprentices to develop into knowledgeable, skilled and reflective Early Years professionals who understand not only what they do, but why they do it.

Through high-quality training and workplace experience, apprentices develop the confidence and competence to make a positive contribution to their setting and, most importantly, to the children and families they support.

We want every apprentice to complete their programme with the skills, knowledge and professional behaviours they need to progress within the Early Years sector and continue developing throughout their career.
